Modest Needs offers grants designed to promote the self-sufficiency of individuals and families who, because they are working and live just above the poverty level, are ineligible for most types of conventional social assistance but who, all the same, are living one or two lost paychecks away from the kind of financial catastrophe that eventually leads to homelessness. Modest Needs programs are designed to help those who work hard and have nowhere else to go for assistance, as well as those who give back to our communities and country such as public school teachers, first responders, veterans returning from service abroad and active duty military members. Generally, Modest Needs offers Self-Sufficiency Grants to qualified individuals/households who need help to afford two specific types of expenses: 1) Unexpected or emergency expenses that an individual or family living paycheck-to-paycheck could not possibly afford without a short-term hand-up. 2) Monthly bills that an individual or family living paycheck-to-paycheck cannot afford to pay at the time of their application because of a documentable extenuating circumstance that occurred within the past year. Washington Helps Its People (WHIP) is a local food pantry created to meet the needs of people within the 61571 zip code. This all-volunteer organization began providing assistance with food for area families in the early 1980s. Today WHIP serves between 120 and 140 families on each of the two days a month it is open for distribution of food. Thanks to the generous contributions from the Washington Township United Fund, local churches, schools, businesses, and Washington residents; WHIP is able to support families in their time of need.

The Graham Health System mental/behavioral health care staff includes Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP), a Licensed Clinical Practice Counselor (LCPC), and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). These professionals provide support to adults, teens, and children seeking diagnosis, short or long-term treatment (including medication, when appropriate), and management of mental and emotional health challenges. Services are offered, by appointment, at the Canton, Elmwood, Farmington, Macomb, and Lewistown locations.

PACE is a Medicare and Medicaid risk-based care program that offers comprehensive, team-based medical and social services for seniors through collaborating health care agencies, allowing older older adults to age at home (as opposed to entering a nursing facility).
